What stays the same in both styles
Swipey builds one product and renders it two ways. Whichever style you pick, the character has persistent memory with Memory cards, the ten relationship levels with reward drops, 100+ roleplay scenarios with plot memory, voice calls and voice messages for Premium members, character-consistent images and on-demand video up to 60 seconds. Inline image editing with the pencil works on both. Group Chat accepts both. The free tier and the $7.99 Premium plan cost the same either way.
So the open question is visual: what she looks like in the pictures and clips you will collect over weeks. Every image, edit and video lands in your Gallery, so after a few weeks it fills with either photoreal pictures or illustrated ones. The rest of this page compares the two.
Realistic vs anime AI girlfriend: the differences
| Realistic | Anime | |
|---|---|---|
| Selfies read as | Phone photos: natural light, real skin, a believable room behind her | Frames from a show: clean lines, saturated colour, stylised eyes |
| Video scenes up to 60 s | Photoreal footage with natural movement | Illustrated motion, closer to an animated clip |
| Reward drops | Photoreal Teasing, Intimate and Full Show clips | Illustrated clips in the same three tiers |
| Memory, voice, levels, price | Same | Same |
The first row decides it for most people. A realistic character's photos look like phone photos: natural lighting, real expressions, a believable balcony behind her. An anime character's images look like frames from a show, which gives them more range in colour, hair and expression and less claim on being a photograph. One is a photograph of someone; the other is a drawing of her, and people tend to know quickly which they want.
What each style does with selfies, video and edits
Selfies arrive the same way in both styles: you ask in chat, or tap a "Show me scene" quick action, and the image keeps her face and body. The selfies page covers the request flow. What differs is the finish. For example, you might ask for a selfie at a rainy café in either style: the realistic version aims to look like a phone photo, and the anime version like a frame from a show. Video follows the same split. A realistic 60-second scene moves like footage from a phone held at arm's length, while an anime scene moves like a short animated sequence. Photo-to-video and extension from chat, both shipped 20 August 2026, work in either style, and so do the reward-drop videos at each of the ten relationship levels. Inline edits with the pencil, shipped 1 September 2026, keep the character consistent, style included, so expect a realistic image to stay realistic and an anime image to stay anime. The pencil is for changing a detail, and switching styles is a decision for Create AI.
Where the styles diverge is tolerance. Anime absorbs bold changes, such as a new hair colour or an outfit that would look odd on a real street, without breaking. Realistic rewards restraint: lighting, location and expression edits look natural, while dramatic changes are more likely to read as wrong. If you like to experiment with a character's look, that difference will matter to you more than anything in the table.
The quickest way to see both looks in motion is the Feed. Platform Models post photos and long-video collages there in both styles, and since 23 September 2026 a Community filter shows posts from public characters that other members built and published through the Creator Community. A few minutes of scrolling shows you how each style holds up across dozens of images from different characters, which is a fairer test than one portrait of each.
Cost and features are identical
There is no price difference between the styles. Creating a character, browsing Platform Models in the feed, basic chat with them and limited image generation are free either way. Premium is $7.99 a month, billed monthly, cancel anytime, and it covers unlimited chat, character-consistent image generation, voice calls and voice messages with a Memory card after each call, video scenes up to 60 seconds, 100+ scenarios with plot memory, full relationship progression, persistent memory across devices, one Fanclub subscription, free daily hearts and 24/7 support via Discord and email. Extra generations cost hearts in both styles.
How to choose in one minute
- You want presence. You want the selfie to feel like it came from a real phone, and you want the 60-second video to look like footage. Pick realistic. The realistic style page shows what to expect.
- You want expression. You like bold colour, exaggerated emotion and outfits that would look odd in daylight. Pick anime. The anime style page has the details.
- You edit a lot. Both styles support the pencil edit in chat (since 1 September 2026). Anime edits tolerate wilder changes, such as a new hair colour, without looking wrong; realistic edits shine on lighting and location. See inline image editing.
- You cannot decide. Create one of each. Swipey lets you build more than one Custom AI, and the builder takes under two minutes per character.
Can you change your mind later?
A second quick test costs nothing either. The Realistic and Anime type pages on swipey.ai each hold a shelf of Platform Models in that style. Open one from each, let her send the welcome photo, and compare the two images side by side. Five minutes of that usually settles the question better than any table, including ours.
Swipey says every detail of a Custom AI is adjustable anytime in Edit My AI. If you would rather keep your first character exactly as she is, create a second one in the other style. Nothing is lost: the first keeps her memory, level and Gallery, and the second starts fresh. You can also use the feed to browse Platform Models in whichever style you are in the mood for, since both are listed there.
The builder-side detail of each style option is on MySwipey. When you have picked, create your AI girlfriend in that style; it is the first step of the flow.
